Effigy on Recovery

ABC
11 July 1998

[ Jane Gazzo is one of the hosts of ABC TV's Recovery show which screens on Saturday mornings from 9am. The show features a lot of new and up-and-coming Aussie bands. ]

Jane: Welcome, Effigy. Peter, Cobina and Jason.

Pete: No trouble.

Jane: And thank you for opening the show with your current single ‘Suspicion Bells'. Its in the shops now and doing very good things too. From the forth-coming album ‘Century Collapsing', your second one. The follow-up to this one - the debut ‘Effigy' which also features ‘I Give In' and ‘Lovers', which kind of started things rolling for you. ‘Century Collapsing'. The title - what does it mean?

Pete: Well, its actually taken from one of the songs what was going to be on the album, but its now a B-side. Other then that, I suppose its just because we're approaching the millennium or something.

Jane: Yes, and all. Year 2000 and all? Recorded with Kalju Tonuma, your follow-up album - who, I heard, was busily producing ‘Pink Pills' by the Mavis', whilst he was recording and producing you guys. How did that all work out?

Pete: Oh, I think it was finished considerably earlier...

Jane: Oh, were they lying?

Pete: They may have been, but...

Jason: He was a busy man.

Pete: He was on the phone a lot, dealing with remixes and things like that. Sp we had to dock his pay a few times, so he's got to concentrate... No, he was fantastic to work with. Crazy, but they all are.

Jane: Yes, yes. I hear that many of them are crazy. You've had a line-up change! Welcome, Cobina - your debut on Recovery. Where's Annie? Where did Annie go?

Jason: Back to Perth.

Jane: Yeah? ‘Cause you're originally from Perth, aren't you?

Cobina: I'm a Melbourne girl though.

Jane: Yes, yes. Originally from ‘Rock ‘N Roll High School' too.

Cobina: Yes, yes.

Jane: For people who aren't aware about what ‘Rock ‘N Roll High School' is, can you just give us a bit of a brief?

Cobina: Yeah, well its basically a non-profit organisation, started up by Stephanie Berk, to sort of encourage young women to play rock music, which is good. And its just in a big house and everyone plays and rocks out. Its really fun.

Jane: And hence you got your break.

Cobina: Yes.

Jane: ...kind of...

Cobina: Yes.

Jane: ...in Effigy?

Jason: That was a pool thing.

Cobina: Yeah, we like pool. We met on a pool table.

Jane: Err...what did you say: "could you be in your band or something"?

Pete: Well, how it happened was quite strange - the week before Annie left, I was playing pool at wherever Cobina works, and...

Cobina: He whipped me as well.

Pete: Yeah. I was playing well that night. Didn't last long. No, she mentioned she was in a band and we just joked about some bands we liked and she said: "Well, if you ever need a bass player..." So...ha, ha, ha! So then a week later we did.

Jason: We were one day without a bass player.

Jane: One whole day! That's pretty good. That's pretty good. Um, been able to get on the road much lately?

Jason: Just been to Adelaide.

Jane: Yeah?

Pete: And we're going to snow!

Jane: Yeah. I think we have tour dates for snow and things like that. Er...new single on the way? Future plans?

Pete: No-one knows what the new single is yet.

Jane: No? Haven't picked it off the album yet?

Pete: That one was going to be the first single - that one just there.

Jane: ‘Caught'. That's a nice song. I like it.

Jason: Yeah. Kind of quirky, that version.

Pete: (mutters) Yeah, we had a couple of things missed...

Jane: Well, people can find you tonight playing that song and many others at the Everlon tonight in Melbourne. You're launching your ‘Suspicion Bells' single, which I have right here - you can hold that up, Peter - and various other gigs. You can find Effigy at...on the 13th, in NSW in Bulls Creek. Yeah, there you go.

Chorus: No, no!

Jane: No, no - its not in NSW - sorry. Um, Mount Hoffman - the Snowbird - on the 14th of this coming month. The Annidale - the Sydney single launch on the 16th. The 17th at the Casbah in NSW with Bluebottle Kiss. The 18th at the Gypsy Bar, and there's various others in QLD.

Pete: Can you tell people to bring birthday presents, on the 16th?

Jane: On the 16th of July? Your birthday?

Pete: Yes.

Jane: Arr! Everybody... Thank you very much. Please thank Effigy and we look forward to hearing more.
